All about the Tall House Experience.

The Melanau people or A-Likou (meaning River people) represents one of the earliest ethnic settlers in Sarawak.   Well known traditionally as skilled fishermen, rice and sago farmers, they live in majestic tall stilted houses by the river.  These unique abodes have since been replaced by more contemporary Malay style village houses. Only a show house at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Kuching and a culturally themed lodge in Mukah, the heartland of the Melanau people exist today.

Spending some time at Lamin Dana or ‘Traditional House’ in archaic Melanau language, the cultural lodge in Mukah (an hour and five minutes small plane flight from Kuching City) is an excellent cultural immersion into the ancient Melanau people’s steep heritage, history and cultural identity, a perfect Borneo experience with an intriguing people.
