All about the Longhouse Stay & Orangutan Spotting.

Set deep in the jungles of Batang Ai, far away from the madding crowd, the local Iban people of Jingin practice a lifestyle very different from our modern day living.  They are the true custodian of the area and make the best guides for a glimpse of this truly pristine wilderness area. Follow them on old hunting trails to spot for the rich flora and fauna of the Borneo tropical rainforest.  With some luck you may even encounter a wild iconic Orangutan perched high atop the tall canopy of this verdant forest landscape. Go wild and reserve your place in the heart of Borneo and experience a totally alternative lifestyle if only for a few days.

  1. Day 1 Heartland of the Dayak

Start your day early as you commence your adventure into the heartland of the Dayak people of Sarawak. Your extended overland journey should take approximately 4 hrs. including a lunch stop at a local bazaar.

Upon arrival at the Batang Ai Boat Terminal, hop onto a longboat and continue the rest of your journey by longboat over the beautiful Batang Ai lake and up the rivers feeding into it to Jingin, an Iban settlement far upstream. The tributaries off the main river twists and bends as it cuts through the rainforest, and it will take your expert boatman approximately 2 hrs. to reach this last longhouse on this river.  The tropical rainforest here is dense with many tall trees shading the forest floor below.

Settle into your accommodation at the longhouse, take in your new surroundings and acquaint yourself with the friendly longhouse community.  Immerse yourself into this unique way of life. Join in the revelry with the popular rice wine or Tuak, enjoy the local food and spend your first night engaging with this greatly hospitable community in their longhouse.

  2. Day 2 Spot Orangutans

Burn off your hearty breakfast with a 5hrs. trek to Tuchong Janang, the highest point in the Batang Ai and the Jingin jungles. Proceeding along the nature trails, you may encounter some wildlife and with some luck you might even spot Orangutans if you are clandestine enough.  Your guide will teach you loads about the lush green jungle and how the tribe uses it to their advantage. Learn the many uses of the many seeds, plants, trees & fruits along the trail. Your guide will pick an idyllic spot for you to stop and refuel with your packed lunch. The whole day is spent in the jungle and you eventually retire to the established camp site in the late afternoon for dinner and a welcomed overnight rest.

  3. Day 3 Road to Serigi

After breakfast, start your trek to Serigi for another hopeful spotting of Orangutans. This strenuous hard trek will take between 4 – 6 hours depending on your fitness level.  Trek back to the campsite in the late afternoon. You’re welcome to join the tribe for a bit of night fishing and then retire for dinner and settle down for the night.

  4. Day 4 Batang Ai lake

At first light, after breakfast, proceed down the river back towards Batang Ai lake.  Enroute, stop for a picnic lunch at one of the stony beaches fringed by the jungle. Here’s your last chance to enjoy a quick swim before returning to Batang Ai Boat Terminal for your onward overland transfer back to the concrete jungles of Kuching.  Truly a lifetime of memories of this magical Borneo experience.
