All about the Kinabatangan Wildlife Safari (3D2N Overland).

Stretching 560km from the Crocker Range in the southwest of Sabah to the Sulu Sea in the east, the Kinabatangan River sustains one of the world’s richest ecosystems.

The Kinabatangan wildlife sanctuary is a mere 26,103 hectares in size and within this tiny area, is a great variety of animals and flora, some endemic to Borneo and some endemic to the area itself.

Wildlife enthusiasts have a good chance of sighting wildlife such as the iconic Orang Utan, Borneo Pygmy Elephant, Proboscis Monkeys, Silver Leaf Monkeys, Macaques, Civet Cats, Snakes, Estuarine Crocodiles, Otters, Wildboars and others. Birders also get to check off their long list of rare birdlife including all 8 species of Hornbills, Blue Headed Pitta, Borneo Bristlehead and more.

  1. Day 1 Orangutan & Sun Bear

    Sandakan to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to Sukau Rainforest Lodge (L/D) On arrival at Sandakan Airport (recommended ETA 0800hrs), transfer to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. We proceed to watch a video show about the plight of the Orangutans and the rehabilitation efforts ongoing at the Centre. Walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalks to witness the feeding of the Orang Utans at 1000hrs, and then we continue to the newly completed enclosed nursery area for young Orangutans. Thereafter visit the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about conservation of the world’s smallest bear.

    Depart for an estimated 2 hours overland journey to the multi awards winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Take a river cruise using electric motor in search of wildlife and birds. Enjoy candle light dinner overlooking the riverbank followed by slide presentation and interpretation by naturalist guide. Stay overnight at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge.

  2. Day 2 Orang Utan Talk

    River Safari & Wildlife Educational Activities (B/L/D) Take a 0600hrs morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to Kelenanap oxbow lake to view more birds and wildlife. After breakfast, proceed for an educational tour along the lodge’s Hornbill Boardwalk with our in-house naturalist. After lunch, join our in house Orang Utan Talk activity. In the afternoon, we proceed for another river cruise for more wildlife. Stay overnight at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge.

  3. Day 3 Rainforest Discovery Centre

    Sukau Rainforest Lodge to Sandakan (B/L) After breakfast, return to Sandakan by overland journey. After lunch we will proceed to airport for the 1430hrs flight to Kota Kinabalu. For those taking the evening flight (ETD 1800hrs), we will have a chance to visit Rainforest Discovery Centre. Take a bird view of the centre from the canopy walk and hanging bridge, explore the botanical garden, home to various species of flora. Proceed to Sandakan Memorial Park for a short visit before taking the flight.
