This is one of Borneo’s largest protected Lowland Rainforest, which boasts 43,800 hectares of pristine and undisturbed tropical flora and fauna in the eastern part of Sabah.  It is home to more than 340 Birds species, 120 species of Mammals, 72 species of Reptiles, 56 species of Amphibians and a staggering 200 species of plants per hectare.

 

Danum Valley Conservation Area is a naturalists’ paradise. Be dazzled by the range of lowland fauna and spot the wild creatures, such as Banteng or Wild Cattle, Asian Pygmy Elephants, Clouded Leopard, Orang Utan, Proboscis Monkey. Don’t forget, sighting is never guaranteed due to the vast expanse of wilderness here.

An alternative option to splurging at the luxurious Borneo Rainforest Lodge is a stay at the Danum Valley Field Center (DVFC), a restricted Nature Conservation and Research facility to experience this wonderful slice of the Borneo wilderness. Explore designated areas around the DVFC including the Nature Trail with a 40 metre Observation Platform, Orchid Trail, Suspension Bridge, Segama Beach and other Self-Guided Trails on your own. Entering into non-designated areas of the rainforest without appointed forest ranger however is strictly prohibited.

  1. Day 1 Arrival

    Be met by your guide at Lahad Datu Hotel or Airport for the pre-departure briefing followed by the overland transfer to DVCA. Visit the Infapro Project Area enroute and learn about forest regeneration, seedling growing techniques, replanting and carbon offset principles. You might wish to contribute by planting your own tree complete with a signboard with your name, tree species and date planted attached to it. Your financial contribution for this act includes the maintenance cost of this tree for 5 years until it reaches maturity.   Expect to arrive at DVCA Reception & Information Building before noon. After checking into your accommodation enjoy lunch at the Resthouse Dining Hall.

    After lunch, take a walk along the 500m, self-guided nature trail and get to know the rainforest. Marvel at its beauty and experience the pristine state of the this one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Trek to the one of the ancient burial caves of long gone communities. A radio carbon analysis on a child’s femur dates back to A.D.1670, while the coffin made of Bornean Iron Wood (Belian) dates back to A.D. 1210.  Return to DVFC for a well-deserved rest before dinner is served. After dinner and weather permitting, hop onto the back of a flat bed truck for a night drive to spot for nocturnal wildlife.

  2. Day 2 Tembaling Waterfall

    After an early breakfast, grab your packed lunch and begin your trek to Tembaling Waterfall and once again soak in the magic of this age old rainforest with its rich flora and fauna. After a two hours trek, take a welcome plunge into the refreshingly clean rainforest stream. After lunch, head back to DVFC and be mesmerized by the colourful plumage of the many birds you spot enroute.  Spend the rest of the late afternoon and evening on your own. After dinner, join a night walk to observe nocturnal wildlife.

  3. Day 3 Bukit Atur

    Leave for Bukit Atur before daybreak and be one of the first to greet the first rays of the sun as it kisses the Danum Valley. After enjoying this spectacle, return to DVFC for breakfast, check out and commencement of your 2 hours overland journey back to Lahad Datu Town or Airport.
